Allegories don’t need to be subtle in order to be good. The ‘The Monsters are Due on Maple Street’ is one of the bluntest instruments in the history of TV, but also one of its most effective; at once embracing — on the surface — the supernatural leanings of a typical episode of The Twilight Zone, before subverting them at the last minute. What makes it, and The Twilight Zone more generally, so effective, is that it understands when to lean into the supernatural and when to shy away from it; when the monster is otherworldly or something all too human.
